Explore the rich tradition of Kawandi quilting in this three-part workshop series led by Sherry Whetstone of InterUrban ArtHouse. Kawandi is a hand-stitched quilting practice developed by the Siddi people, an Afro-Indigenous community in India.

Traditionally made from repurposed fabric scraps, Kawandi quilts are created from the outside edges inward, resulting in bold geometric patterns and deeply personal designs that reflect both creativity and resourcefulness. In this hands-on series, participants will learn the techniques and history behind this unique textile tradition while creating a Kawandi-inspired tote bag.

Through layering, piecing and hand stitching, makers will explore the improvisational nature of Kawandi and transform fabric remnants into a functional work of art. Because each session builds on the skills and techniques introduced in the previous workshop, registration includes all three sessions and participants are expected to attend the full series.

Whether you are new to fiber arts or an experienced maker, this workshop offers an opportunity to connect with a remarkable artistic tradition.
